Let us send hope and light to our nation.
A short intro paragraph comes here so that it stands out from the rest of the text on this page.
Due to the pandemic and heightened security from last week’s attack, most residents cannot participate in this year’s inauguration as in past years. Please join us in placing luminarias or lights in your windows or outside your home at dusk on Inauguration Night on January 20 to bring light and hope to our nation’s capital. If using luminarias, we encourage you to write a message of hope on the bag. Please take pictures and share on social media and tag us #illuminationdc.
We recommend using luminarias (paper bags with lights inside) with battery operated lights, LED lights, glow sticks, or lanterns, but any light source will do. For example, you could put holiday lights in a paper bag or clear jar and place them in your windows. If using live candles, please do not leave them unattended.
For those participating within the District, we recommend doing this in the safety of your own homes, particularly in heightened security areas. We recommend paying close attention to any security alerts to guide you but above all, please keep your safety and security in mind and make sure your light choice is safe and secure.
We hope to continue the momentum for a date further away from Inauguration (possibly 100 days from Inauguration) when it is safer to celebrate on the streets. We hope you will continue to find ways to send hope and light to our nation.
